About Mike Rubin

Hi! I’m Mike Rubin, a physician, scientist, engineer, entrepreneur, educator, and most importantly husband and father. I’m the Founder and CEO of a science-driven venture capital firm called Northpond Ventures. We’re a multi-billion dollar enterprise focused on building and supporting businesses with the potential to positively transform human health and science. Over the years I’ve been fortunate to have helped build and grow over 100 businesses, including ushering over a dozen IPOs and dozens of acquisitions.

I’m also an Adjunct Professor at Stanford Medicine, and a visiting scholar at both Harvard (Wyss Institute) and MIT (School of Engineering). We run research and entrepreneurship facilities at all three of these universities, where we help develop breakthrough science and build new companies. I also teach entrepreneurship to both undergraduate and graduate students at these schools.

Prior to founding Northpond, I co-founded Sands Capital Ventures with Frank Sands, and was its Managing Partner. We were venture investors in a broad array of industries including the life sciences, global consumer, information technology, mobile computing, financial technology, and industrials. We were fortunate to be a part of the development of some large and iconic companies across all these areas.

As a life long learner, I’ve picked up degrees in engineering, medicine, and business, including two doctoral degrees, and a masters. I’m also a CFA charter holder, became a licensed physician and surgeon, and a member of the American College of Surgeons. I’ve also been fortunate to publish peer reviewed journal articles, author book chapters in leading texts, conduct clinical trials, engage in sponsored investigations, and lead research teams.

My greatest joy is my family. I’m incredibly fortunate to have met and married my wife, Iris Rubin, a physician and medical entrepreneur. We have three wonderful children and live in Bethesda, MD. I have a black belt in Tang Soo Do, enjoy running marathons (Boston is my favorite), and am a certified specialist of wine. When I can, I try to squeeze in some time to study physics, and I’m learning to brew — often, very bad — beer.
